Abstract The work of the teacher contemplates responsibilities that go beyond giving hours of classes and fulfilling hours of attendance at the institution. It includes research, planning, linking, among others, that require an immediate response to the demands of the university and the environment. These demands, according to their complexity, can generate damages in their health. In accordance with what was described, the objective of determining the psychosomatic reactions caused by stress that affect the mental health of the teachers of the Technical University of Manabí was raised. A descriptive, quantitative approach was used. As psychological tests, the Hamilton Stress Test was applied to assess physical and psychological states and the Work Stress Test to explore the usual symptoms associated with stress. 53 teachers who fulfilled the inclusion criteria participated: being teachers of the Faculty of Humanistic and Social Sciences with a minimum stay of one year, full-time dedication and being in permanent activity. Among the results obtained, irritability and restlessness can be seen as evidenced by the variable mood disorder, which reveals the existence of possible emotional disturbances, psudoneurological disorders with painful symptoms such as headaches, neck and back pain, difficulty in sitting and sweating hands. There are sleep disorders and cardiopulmonary problems together with gastrointestinal symptoms.
