El objetivo del presente estudio estuvo enmarcado en proponer un modelo teórico para la ciudad sostenible. Para ello se empleó un análisis bibliográfico, descriptivo y de contenido de las características que, para este tipo de ciudad, plantean varios autores. La investigación documental indagó sobre la ciudad como satisfactor, y sobre los enunciados teóricos emitidos por diversos autores, considerados como fiables por ser criterios de connotados profesionales dedicados a la investigación de la temática de estudio, sobre las particularidades que debería tener la ciudad sostenible. Entre los hallazgos más reveladores se destaca que la ciudad sostenible no solo debe comprender tipologías y estándares urbanísticos, sino también el ejercicio pleno de derechos humanos. Como conclusiones principales se establecen que la ciudad sostenible debe ser: un espacio físico con entornos densos, diversos, integradores, eficientes y verdes, ambientes que deben estar en la planificación y la normativa urbanísticas; y debe considerarse como un espacio satisfactor de la justicia, la inclusión, la producción, la cultura, la seguridad, la participación y la educación, que son consideradas necesidades humanas básicas que constituyen derechos humanos universales.

The objective of this study was framed in proposing a theoretical model for the sustainable city. For this, a bibliographic, descriptive and content analysis of the characteristics that, for this type of city, several authors propose, was used. The documentary research inquired about the city as satisfying, and about the theoretical statements issued by various authors, considered reliable because they are criteria of renowned professionals dedicated to the investigation of the subject of study, about the particularities that the sustainable city should have. Among the most revealing findings, it stands out that the sustainable city must not only include urban typologies and standards, but also the full exercise of human rights. The main conclusions establish that the sustainable city must be: a physical space with dense, diverse, integrating, efficient and green environments, environments that must be included in urban planning and regulations; and it must be considered as a space that satisfies justice, inclusion, production, culture, security, participation and education, which are considered basic human needs that constitute universal human rights.
