Over the years, the housing concept has been changing in benefit of economic and political interests and society in general; housing went from being conceived as an element that cannot be understood without its environment, to be an independent element. The following research sets out analyze and understand the principles that guided the planning of the projects, and how people, their needs and their way of living are important when designing a house. For this purpose, a combined methodology was adapted, starting from the Solanda Plan and based on the comparison of physical and functional characteristics of several social housing projects developed in Latin America since modernity, and supported by the analysis of literature review, thus allowing to understand the importance of citizen participation and showing how people and their way of living are the ones who personalize the spaces.
