Overweight and obesity are one of the main public health problems around the world, due to their magnitude and importance. The main objective of this research was to determine the relation between overweight /obesity and the sleep hours. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, including doctors, nurses and residents of the Favaloro Foundation's clinical department. In order to evaluate the sleep hours, it was applied the Pittsburgh questionnaire. The main results show that a high percentage of the participants were overweight / obese (76.2% men, 65.5% women), with higher prevalence in the age of 35 to 44 years (100%) compared to the other age groups 45-54 (83.3%) and 25-34 (61.1%). In addition, 82.0% of the participants resulted with sleep debt. The proportion of overweight / obesity was more significant among those who presented sleep debt (75.6%), in contrast with those who did not (44.4%). However, that difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.106). In conclusion, a short sleep pattern along with the presence of overweight is a risk factor for the development of various chronic diseases, affecting the population in general and the health personnel as well.
