Frente a la creciente adopción de los servicios ofrecidos por computación en la nube y con el advenimiento del Internet de las cosas, así como la conexión de más y más dispositivos a la red, es necesario explorar las nuevas soluciones que se vienen planteando para disponer de plataformas tecnológicas más flexibles y de fácil expansión que soporten los actuales y nuevos servicios. La exploración de esas nuevas propuestas tecnológicas, necesariamente debe partir de sus fundamentos teóricos, razón por la cual en este documento se pretende clarificar en los lectores los conceptos de SDN y NVF, términos que a menudo se confunden. Para la conceptualización de estos dos términos, se han planteado tres preguntas directrices: ¿Qué significan SDN y NFV? ¿Por qué son necesarios SDN y NFV? y ¿Qué ventajas ofrecerían SDN y NFV para las redes de datos? Sus respuestas, basadas en un análisis selectivo de documentos relevantes, proporcionarán la información suficiente para comprender y diferenciar el ámbito de estos dos temas; y, ayudarán a identificar las características de la nueva arquitectura de redes que será implantada en el futuro próximo, en las redes de los operadores de telecomunicaciones, con la finalidad de hacer frente a los desafíos tecnológicos originados por el aumento de la demanda en los servicios de red.

Due to the increasing demand of cloud computing services, along with the advent of the Internet of Things and the growing number of network connected devices, it becomes compulsory to explore different forthcoming solutions in order to have more flexible, easy-expandable technology platforms available and also capable of tolerating and supporting new and current services. Exploring these technological approaches must necessarily start off from theoretical foundations. Consequently, this document intent is to clarify the concepts of SDN and NVF, which are usually misinterpreted, among the readers. Three leading questions have been established in order to conceptualize these terms: What do SDN and NFV mean? Why are SDN and NFV necessary? What kind of advantages do SDN and NFV offer for data networking? The answers, based on selectively analyzing relevant documentation, will provide enough information to understand and distinguish the scopes of both terms. Additionally, clarifying these terms will aid in the effort to identify the features of a new network architecture, which might as well be implanted within mobile network operators. This new network architecture will be considered to face the technological challenges that resulted by the increasing demand of network services.
