Reassuming Abram de Swaan’s and Norbert Elias' contributions, the article observes that the interdependencies between nature and (dis)civilizing processes are essential for a processual focus on Protected Natural Areas (PNA). It describes common features of PNA and their relationships with various management models, taking examples from Mexico and Argentina. It proposes a bibliographical review of background studies, official documents, and ethnographic works in Mexico and Argentina as a framework for future comparative analyses of PNA. It concludes with a summary of the key components that PNA have in common as well as the potential applications of the “compartmentalization” concept.
