This study conducts a socio-historical interpretation of illegal mining fronts and their affinities with two criminal groups, Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), which violently expanded from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to the Amazon region, starting in 2014. The hypotheses is that the native concept of “narcogarimpo,” emerging in the current context, can help illustrate trends in a process of reorganization of criminal ecology in the Brazilian Amazon. In order to support hypotheses, the study relies on literature review and constant dialogue with empirically collected data through ethnological reflection and ethnographic practice, direct observation, research in documentary archives, among other methods.
