ABSTRACT: The article aims to analyze a series of documentaries from Argentina and Brazil based on two key notions: face and portrait. If the face occupied a prominent place in the history of the genre of the portrait, the main objective of the article is to explore how it is approached in contemporary times. In Diário de uma busca (Flávia Castro, 2010), 33 (Kiko Gifman, 2002) and El silencio es un cuerpo que cae (Agustina Comedi, 2018), the face is no longer conceived as the surface on which the identity of the subject is expressed, but as a space to be searched and unraveled. These documentaries, directed by sons and daughters who aim to trace the faces of their absent fathers or mothers, function as portraits that address the historical, political and generational nature of faces.
ABSTRACT: Within the current saturated panorama of the film industry, one director stands out for his dense filmography largely dedicated to developing stories whose protagonists face the threat of the serial killer. David Fincher has been responsible for the construction of a contemporary imaginary about these infamous characters, excessively media-friendly, who have frightened the public and caused panic within American society. In this work we propose to dissect Fincher's works that are dedicated to delving into the phenomenon of serial killers, the role played by the media in creating their public image and the role of the security forces when it comes to hunting down these terrible murderers. Symbolizing Migrant Marginality and Intergenerational Identity.
ABSTRACT: In recent years, Spanish cinema has shown increasing interest in migration narratives, reflecting the cultural diversity of contemporary society. However, the representation of Asian immigrants - particularly those of Chinese origin-remains scarce. This study examines Chinas (Arantxa Echevarría, 2023) through a qualitative textual film analysis to explore the depiction of marginal subjects and the intergenerational construction of identity within the migratory context. Drawing on Homi Bhabha’s concept of the “third space,” the analysis reveals how the film employs verbal and non-verbal signs to portray the tension between Chinese cultural traditions and integration into Spanish society. The findings highlight Chinas as a significant yet limited step toward visibility, portraying a hybrid identity that exposes both the challenges and constraints of representing the Chinese community in contemporary Spanish cinema. NInA and Cultural Virtuality.
ABSTRACT: The emergence of virtual influencers generated through artificial intelligence is reshaping digital communication practices and influencer marketing by combining full image control with emotional connection strategies typical of human spokespersons. In 2024, NInA was introduced in Ecuador as the country’s first virtual influencer, designed with a hybrid aesthetic that merges mestizo features and local cultural references with globalized codes of digital fashion. This study examines NInA’s case through three analytical vectors: hybrid aesthetics and cultural legitimacy, the semiotic construction of digital identity, and the ethical dimension in the creative technological mediation of culture. The methodology integrates qualitative interpretative analysis with an assessment of interaction metrics on TikTok and Instagram. Findings indicate that communicative effectiveness and cultural legitimacy depend on the coherence between visual design, narrative articulation, and ethical management, proposing a model applicable to future virtual characters in Ibero-American contexts. Artivism.
ABSTRACT: This work was carried out within a research group (ALMARGEN) as part of an International Cooperation Project funded by the University of Jaén, Spain, in collaboration with the Technical University “Luis Vargas Torres”. Afro-rap, as an artivist proposal, was presented to UNESCO and won, representing Ecuador. Using a methodology based on art, life stories, and participant observation, hair is taken as the central axis to problematize poverty, power, and racism. The Cooperation Project aimed to create a shared academic artivist space between Jaén and Esmeraldas, imagining free bodies in colonized, racialized, impoverished, and vulnerable territories. Rap served as a tool for deterritorialization and displacement, allowing the UTLVTE proposal to become that novelty that defies explanation. Its transcendence and capacity for penetration proved more effective in the anti-racist struggle than dense conceptual content. Geometry of Abandonment.
ABSTRACT: This article analyzes how Esmeraldas' Feeling-Thinking, a Southern epistemology that integrates emotion, territory, and art, shapes an autoethnographic narrative to understand the geographies of state abandonment and structural racism in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Through the analysis of the poetry collection Geometría del Abandono, a result of qualitative and artivist research, poetic language is explored as a tool to map precariousness, but also to highlight the powerful geometries of community resistance and re-existence. The research concludes that literary autoethnography, anchored in sentipensamiento, offers a more holistic and situated understanding that challenges hegemonic narratives and recognizes the power of first-person oral-writing to heal, denounce, and reimagine the territory. What would your hair say if it could speak? A documentary to reframe hegemonic frameworks of racist beauty http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2588-09342026000100147&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt RESUMEN: Un documental, del grupo internacional de investigación ALMARGEN.
ABSTRACT: A documentary produced by the international research group ALMARGEN was centered on the core research question: What would your hair say if it could talk? The methodology employed was autoethnographic and analytical. The primary tool that gave meaning to the field was the interview, which was conducted spontaneously and without preparation from the collaborators. Following a triple analysis approach -visual, critical, and anti-racist- three core categories emerged: Care, Social Pressure, and Identity. From these categories and their corresponding film stills, intersubjective dimensions were revealed, ranging from treatment and dyeing practices to outright racism. The topic of hair proved to be a powerful subject, one that speaks and creates epistemology. The research contributed new developments in counter-grain hairstyling. Furthermore, it demonstrated that the body's dialogue with hair establishes a common thread that connects feelings beneath the scalp with outward image: an inside-outside dynamic mediated by hair. For the ALMARGEN group, the documentary served as a culmination of five years of transdisciplinary work. We understood, from the outset, that we were not merely talking about hair. Networks That Trap.
ABSTRACT: This article reflects on the transformation of social media from spaces of human interaction to environments dominated by algorithmic entertainment. The central issue addressed is the erosion of social bonds and the rise of digital dependency, driven by artificial intelligence systems that optimize user retention at the expense of well-being. The main objective is to analyze how these mechanisms alter consumption habits, interpersonal relationships, and perceptions of time and identity. The justification lies in the need to understand the psychosocial impact of these platforms, especially among young people, within a context of increasing disconnection and constant overstimulation. The article concludes that, although social media offers communicative benefits, the current model treats attention as a commodity, resulting in consequences that call for critical awareness and new forms of regulation. Technology itself is not the problem, but rather the way it is being used. Artificial Intelligence as a Multimedia Content Generator.
ABSTRACT: This study examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the generation of multimedia content (graphics, audio, and video) using tools such as Craiyon, DALL·E, Midjourney, Make-A-Video, CapCut, InVideo, among others. Through a qualitative literature review using the SALSA (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, Analysis) method, relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 were consulted. Additionally, three specific cases were analyzed: Coca-Cola's advertising strategy, viral images inspired by the Ghibli style, and voice cloning in the song Heart On My Sleeve. The findings show AI's efficiency, accessibility, personalization, and ability to facilitate specific tasks within the creative industry. However, its functionality depends on human judgment so that challenges related to authorship, ethics, and algorithmic biases do not intensify. The research concludes that, when used appropriately, AI becomes a powerful ally in the creative and multimedia world, without replacing human judgment and creativity, enabling greater productivity.
ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the official advertising posters for the Fruit and Flower Festival in the city of Ambato from 2011 to 2025. It is based on the recognition of posters as a primary source for understanding historical periods. Fifteen posters were selected for analysis based on their graphic design, criteria, and feasibility for the study. Semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and graphic content analysis were applied, based on Norberto Chaves' poster theory, which considers six analytical categories: contact, information, persuasion, identification, conventionality, and aesthetics. The results showed an evolution in the use of visual elements, with a marked presence of authorial styles, but also contrasts in terms of the incorporation of key data such as the year or edition number and a recurring tendency to use generic icons. It is concluded that posters, although they have value as a visual communication tool and symbolic archive, require methodological articulation. This study contributes to the field of graphic design from an analytical perspective for future visual productions linked to heritage celebrations.
