Abstract This research analyzes the impact of Deutsche Grammophon album covers on the contemporary perception of classical music. Through an interdisciplinary approach that brings together visual semiotics, reception aesthetics, and visual culture, it examines how graphic elements contribute to the construction of musical meaning. The study develops a qualitative analysis of three emblematic covers: Beethoven: 9 Symphonien, conducted by Herbert von Karajan (1963); Mahler: Symphony No. 5, with Claudio Abbado (1994); and Bach: Transcriptions, by Hélène Grimaud (2009). It considers color, typography, composition, and iconography in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. The results reveal a transformation in the representation of the performer, from symbolic authority to contemporary introspection. Album covers function as devices of cultural mediation that guide listening, activate imaginaries, and resignify the musical experience. The Chromatic Imaginaries of Bradbury and Rothko: A Retrofuturistic Fiction Exercise with AI http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2477-91992026000100024&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Resumen Diversos autores de ciencia ficción han imaginado futuros distópicos, interplanetarios y tecnológicos.
Abstract Various science fiction authors have imagined dystopian, interplanetary, and technological futures. This work analyzes four of his stories from a chromatic, sensory, and abstract perspective. Mark Rothko explored color as a direct language for the spirit, capable of transcending the intellect and connecting with human emotions through chromatically symbolic compositions. Inspired by both creators, visual proposals were developed to translate the atmosphere and sensations of each story, using artificial intelligence tools-an emblem of the technology imagined by Bradbury and its impact on contemporary life. The result may be questioned in terms of legitimacy or authorship, yet it stands on experimentation, boldness, and the improbable convergence of sensibilities.
Abstract Alternative photographic printing techniques such as chlorophyll printing process, anthotype, cyanotype, and pressure tracing transfer constitute hybrid processes that articulate digital input with manual, tactile and experimental procedures. This hybridization acquires relevance within art education as it fosters a formative practice in which the artist's body actively intervenes in a performative process: they manipulate, wait, decide, observe and experiment. In contrast with the immediacy of the digital, these techniques promote a critical relationship with the material and recover the value of the body as a sensitive agent in artistic creation processes.
Abstract This essay observes the series Histoire des robes by the French artist Annette Messager as an example of the way in which she uses textiles and clothing in her production. Furthermore, it examines how, through the dresses, she reflects on the social associations they carry. The article will offer a concise overview of key aspects of the use of textiles and garments of twentieth century western art. Subsequently, Messager’s work will be examined to understand how she uses dresses to reconstruct a history, story or individual and collective narrative.
Abstract Collective Intelligences is an artistic project that invites participants to gather intuitions, fictions, thoughts, or dreams that arise around the idea of imagining alternative presents that allow us to look in directions other than dystopian technological predictions. Have you ever wondered what the planet would be like if we built kinder relationships with the earth and the rest of its inhabitants? This was the question used in the search for imaginative texts from various parts of the world. The texts were brought into dialogue with a free software AI system designed to generate images, so that each text left a mark as writing and as a moving image of the coincidences, encounters, contrasts, contradictions, and imaginaries of this moment. The project aims to initiate a fabric of collective imagination networks that redirect the machinery that designs our subjectivity. Religious fictions.
Abstract In this paper, a visual analysis is carried out based on three stills from the television series La Mesías (2023). This series is considered religious fiction, which is proposed here as a category of analysis for works, in this case visual, that reconfigure elements of the religious story in their own fictional worlds. For a broader definition of the proposed category, three frames were selected that display aspects of the visual elements’ characteristic of the representation of Christ in his iconographic tradition: the gesture and the Ascension, which are notable moments in the history of the series. We confirm the permanence of the images of the sacred, their validity and actualization through cultural products that not only retake but also reintegrate religious narratives, adjusting them to a specific audience and type of consumption. The discourse and hierarchy of the arts in Chile between 1974 and 1979.
Abstract This article focusses on the years following the 1973 coup in Chile and analyzes the artistic discourses of the period. It suggests that the discourse of Chilean art as a national identity has been a political tool for control and the exercise of power, culturally established in Chile since the 1920s, which employs the hierarchy of the fine arts to emulate and perpetuate the status quo. Based on this premise, official discourses are examined to problematize how they have shaped ideological and social notions that implicitly or explicitly sustain and hierarchize artistic disciplines. These discourses emerged between 1974 and 1979, specifically from the Chilean government's 1974 Cultural Policy, complemented by the three traveling exhibitions organized by the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1977 and 1978.
Abstract This article examines the video performance series Suicidal Practices, created in 2006 by Quito-based artist Valeria Andrade. The essay begins with an introduction exploring the relationship between art and walking, followed by a discussion of Ecuadorian artistic proposals that engage with Andrade's work. The case study details the artist's methodologies and artistic explorations, as well as her production processes, and describes each of the eight video art pieces that comprise the series. It reflects on how the artist, through walks and journeys on public transportation, engages with public space, posing questions to passersby. The article argues that, through Suicidal Practices, Andrade powerfully presents her critical stance on issues such as gender roles, gender-based violence, and the vulnerability of women.
Abstract This study examines how the artistic project Viaje Sonoro, created by Juan Fernando Duque, functions as a tool for raising awareness among 40 participants regarding the urban and natural soundscape of Chinácota (Colombia). The proposal seeks to promote understanding of the sonic elements that shape the environment and of acoustic pollution, which are often imperceptible in everyday life. A qualitative approach supported by descriptive quantitative elements was applied through pre‑ and post‑experience questionnaires and direct observation during the route. The results show that, prior to the activity, participants held fragmented notions of sound, noise, silence, and soundscape. During the journey, most were able to identify geophonic, biophonic, and anthropophonic sounds with greater precision, demonstrating more attentive listening. After the experience, all 40 participants reported acquiring a new way of perceiving sound, and 35 recognized acoustic pollution in the territory. The study concludes that Viaje Sonoro enhances auditory awareness and promotes conscious listening practices.
Abstract Acknowledging the essential role of imagination in the invention of artistic knowledge, this text explores the symbiotic relationship between diverse contemporary philosophical currents and artistic practices. The article takes as its sole point of departure a quote by Graham Harman, who in 1999 described his object-oriented philosophy as "a kind of alchemy." By invoking this alchemy as an image capable of articulating various intuitions-from what the author himself sought to convey, to our own conception of artistic research- the inquiry rapidly expands into a constellation of posthumanist currents, all bound by a shared drive to decenter the human in our systems of thought. It is from this territory that the text attempts to approach the underlying reasons behind the increasingly evident material turn in contemporary art. Premises for approaching artistic work from an object-oriented ontology. Note and approximations http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2477-91992026000100139&lng=pt&nrm=iso&tlng=pt Resumen El presente trabajo revisa algunos conceptos propios de la Ontología Orientada a Objetos (Harman, 2016a, 2016b 2019, 2021; Morton, 2023).
Abstract This paper reviews some concepts from Object Oriented Ontology (Harman, 2016 a, 2016 b, 2019, 2021; Morton, 2023), For this purpose, a review of concepts was carried out and 5 premises were identified that fulfill the objectives of guiding reflection, hoping that in this way we can contribute to knowledge, from a conceptual openness that implies assuming that there are multiple forms of knowledge and ways of apprehending the artistic object. This requires tuning people and objects, assuming that they are in the middle of a continuun in which one participates to the extent that they manifest themselves by some of their qualities or constitutive elements, allowing people to approach artistic objects, this supposes the recognition of unconventional ways of approaching and apprehending the artistic object, understood as a process from the proposed philosophical approach. Data, that non-representable object.
Abstract This article addresses the issue of data representation in the context of contemporary art from the perspective of Graham Harman's object-oriented ontology (OOO). Starting from an interest in the artistic translation of the physical infrastructure of the internet, it analyzes various artistic practices that have attempted to allude to what is hidden in the flow of data through metaphorical strategies. Through various case studies, it examines how metaphor allows oblique access to entities that remain withdrawn on the ontological plane. The analysis finally focuses on Personal Photographs by Eva & Franco Mattes, a work that introduces a critical friction with OOO by turning withdrawal into a conscious and ironic aesthetic strategy. It is proposed that this instrumentalization of the inaccessible does not invalidate Harman's theory, but it does reveal its limits when withdrawal ceases to be an ontological condition and operates as an artistic procedure.
Abstract This article seeks to properly thematize the question of the possibility of art without humans establishing the conditions under which it can constitute a philosophical problem and admit a possible response. To this end, it advances a specific notion of problems, which requires a critical exposition and discussion of problematics within continental philosophy. On this basis, and through a defense of the materialism realism of Quentin Meillassoux, the article argues for the realist charge implied in the literal formulation of the question of an art without humans. Finally, after distinguishing the possible interpretations of this question, it maintains that it invokes the aesthetic dimension of the problem of extinction and proposes a way forward through consideration of the artistic status of yet-undiscovered cave paintings.
Abstract Ilich Castillo’s exhibition PRÓDROMO takes as its point of departure a work first presented twenty years earlier at the Salón de Julio in Guayaquil: Cómo se encienden los discursos populares, según Homs (2005), an año viejo effigy based on the model for the monument commemorating the meeting between Bolívar and San Martín. From this piece, the project unfolds a reflection on historical commemoration, popular sculpture, masculinity, power, and the unstable construction of identity in Latin America. The exhibition establishes a lateral dialogue with Samuel Robinson and Simón Rodríguez, Bolívar’s teachers, utopian thinkers, inventors, and figures situated at the margins of power. Through works that repurpose editorial materials, domestic objects, light, paraffin, precarious structures, and historical references, Castillo examines the graphic imaginaries of the “Latin American,” the unfinished promises of education, the circulation of regional discourses, and the fragility of emancipatory narratives. PRÓDROMO thus operates as a critical and polyphonic reading of history’s remains, moving between tragedy, caricature, and the possibility of inventing from what is missing.
Abstract The “Materia Blanca” project explores the intricate relationship between perception, memory, and the subjective construction of reality, specifically focusing on how vision can induce illusory bodily sensations. Employing manipulated lenses and magnifying crystals as optical tools, the work aims to expand visual imagery, evoking the sense of touch through sight. This approach facilitates the study of perceptual shifts and cognitive expansion spurred by technological structures and emergent epistemologies. Furthermore, the project engages with the concept of haptic memory within a post-pandemic context increasingly mediated by digital interactions. “Materia Blanca” challenges traditional scientific methodologies, opting instead for an intimate and sensual data collection method that prioritizes the affective experience of the viewer over rational and economic objectivity.
