Abstract This research aims to conduct a film analysis of My Dinner with André (Louis Malle, 1981) based on a close reading of both the dialogue and the cinematic device: composition, framing, rhythm, lighting, and sound. Applying a close reading methodology of key scenes (timestamps are indicated), these readings are compared with the theoretical frameworks of Michel Foucault (discipline/biopolitics), Gilles Deleuze (societies of control), Angela Davis (critique of the prison-industrial complex), and Gilles Lipovetsky (emptiness and hyperindividualism). It is argued that the film, even in its economy of means, visually and sonically articulates contemporary forms of normalization and surveillance, showing how fear and precarity are incorporated as technologies of governance. Finally, it discusses possibilities of resistance that emerge in the film’s micropolitical interstices and points out interpretive limits that should be problematized.
Abstract Art can connect us with the essence of the material world, as through its creative processes we can grasp a superconsciousness of the physical universe, harmonising us with cosmic life. In this endeavour, art itself is an effort of the mind and life in search of its own perfection and wholeness. In this article, we will analyse the psychological mechanisms that operate in both the artist and the viewer in their relationship with the energy hidden in physical nature, and how consciousness can be enhanced through creative processes, thanks to the knowledge provided by the material world. In this context, subjectivity plays an enormous role, as the work is developed intuitively, thereby becoming a process of transformation that leads to an encounter at a higher level.
Abstract In this case, rather than addressing walking art as an artistic and creative medium and end, or as a methodology for research+creation, I aim to highlight it as a means of subverting the status quo within the context of the walking art project Paisajes Migrantes Andinos. The displacement of the Southern position of South America upwards –towards the North, rather than downwards, as suggested by the world map as a reference– in eight drawing+map works created by Venezuelan migrant walkers reveals situated and embodied cognitive and epistemological possibilities. These challenge the conventions of imperial and hegemonic visual imaginaries —arbitrary and imposed— that have become naturalized and normalized yet remain deeply rooted in the present. To contrast and distinguish a subverted form from an inverted one, I revisit several proposals of geographically repositioned places —also upside down— on the map, such as América Invertida by the Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres-García.
Abstract In this paper, we analyze research in the field of design from a methodological and critical perspective. We understand research practice not only as a set of actions oriented toward the production of knowledge, but also as a complex endeavor shaped by social, historical, cultural, political, institutional, and epistemological conditions. From this perspective, we problematize the modes of validation and legitimation of project-based knowledge, addressing the tensions between the frameworks of modern science and the specificities of design practice. Our aim is not to establish normative prescriptions about how research in design should be conducted, but to open a space for reflection that situates the debate historically, institutionally, and socially, and examines its ontological, epistemological, and methodological dimensions. Finally, we propose broadening the discussion to contemporary approaches —such as creativity as method, decolonial perspectives, and the ecology of knowledge— to recognize the plurality of ways of conducting design research.
Abstract In this collective exhibition, Juana Córdova, Irina Liliana García, and Pamela Suasti work from different regions in Ecuador in a creative dialogue shaped by Estiaje —the seasonal recession of rivers— which also becomes a metaphor for waiting, fragility, and care. Using gathered materials such as wool, seeds, leaves, branches, and honey, and techniques that require presence and time —like weaving, botanical printing, or hand-molding— the artists experiment with collaborative modes of creation that challenge individual boundaries. In this process, they allow themselves to intervene in each other’s works, as in an exquisite corpse, embracing the unexpected. Landscape, the body, and vegetal life intertwine in a poetic that explores the tension between the intimate and the collective, the ephemeral and the vital, opening a sensitive reflection on our relationship with nature. This curatorial text was written for the exhibition Estiaje, held in July 2024 at Saladentro in the city of Cuenca (Ecuador), and at Casa del Barrio gallery in Guayaquil (Ecuador) during the months of August and September of the same year.
Abstract Cartografías para un árbol de agua (Cartographies for a Water Tree) explores the relationship between science, technology, and landscape through a visual re-reading of historical river maps from Ecuador and South America. Based on maps from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, the project extracts and transforms river outlines—such as those of the Guayas and the Amazon— into tree-like or vegetal structures. This process of translation and transmutation challenges the modern impulse to measure and classify the world, proposing instead a poetics of flow and coexistence. The works engage with scientific drawings by Darwin, Haeckel, Whittaker and others, in which the tree becomes a metaphor for knowledge and evolution. The resulting cyanotypes operate as mnemonic cartographies: images that condense memory, territory, and time, revealing a symbolic landscape where science and myth intertwine.
